Who is Nightlark?

Nightlark is...the unknown bird that sings outside my window when I am awake late at night, painting or writing poetry. Nightlark is like a state of mind- a expansive mind that is full of wonder, mystery, and open to exploring possibilities. Nightlark, sings this most beautiful song, at never anticipated  times, out of the blue, under the stars and moon, when most are fast asleep and cannot hear its song. I, on the other hand, often get inspired to create my art at night and so I have this mysterious musical accompaniment to keep me company. Nightlark does not ask why, how, if its song is "good enough", or if it can find the time, to sing? Nightlark just sings-  sharing its gift.  I believe were all born as explorers and creative beings and that we all have our own creative potential and unique gifts to share. In that spirit of spontaneous expression and sharing of creativity I have created this website. I hope that your visit here inspires you to your own creativity and that you consider sharing your own unique creative gifts with the world.

Who does Nightlark sing to?

Nightlark sings to self taught artist KLH- that's me and I have been given several names on my journey. Given no name at birth- my parents named me Kristin Lee at age 3 months old. I was also given the name Kricket as a child- some of my poetry may be signed Kricket- why I was given this name is long forgotten and many people still call me Kricket.

My next name is my intials: KLH which I used since I was an adolescent to sign my paintings, some people even call me by KLH as my name. It is under these initials and Kristin L.H. that my outsider art paintings, poetry, and sound collages  are archived at Vanderbilt University.

I also have been given the most precious name of all: Mom... and so I have included some parenting links that I found to be valuable to explore on my links page.

I have often been called "art healer" because I have an interest in the alternative healing arts, spiritual healing, and power of and potential of the arts to heal- for more info you can contact me, browse my interesting links page, or my soon to be added "art healing" page.  I am also Reiki healer.

Most recently I have been given the name "Neighbor" by my 4 year old neighbor (that is really what she calls me) and since that is my newest name, I am still discovering the meaning of being given that name. I'll let you know when I know, but it seems to be reflecting that we are all really neighbors to each other on this planet we all share and I hope we will strive to act with compassion to the planet, to ourselves, and to one another. I also identify with my special winged creature and so maybe my next name is Nightlark, but for now this site is named Nightlark in honor of the creative expression we all have access to. I am a combination of my names- yet none of them define who I am. My art, poetry, and photographs may be a better expression than a name to tell you who it 'really is" that Nightlark sings to.

What is Nightlark Arts?

Nightlark Arts is my newest attempt to connect my many different art creations into a synthesized whole for web visitors to explore. It is a new home for KLH ART. It is starting with my original outsider art abstract paintings, photographs, and poetry. Later I will add my spoken word poetry with music and original songs mp3 clips, and art that moves and transforms by computer technology onto DVD with original music. I will also have a link to order my soon to be published poetry book.

Nightlark Arts may soon have a interactive message board called "Nightlark Circle" so visitors can post their own poetry, thoughts, art, and ideas and give comments and support to each other.. if there is interest I will create and moderate it. It will evolve as like spirited people are drawn to the site and it will become... we will see what it becomes, it will be created  and change with the natural process of creativity with interaction and growth by you, evolving and becoming what it wishes to be. Please check back as it will be added soon. You may want to consider joining this unique message board community.

I have hundreds of older paintings, drawings, photos, and poems that I am trying to compile and organize to post on this website and creating new work... so please be patient. I will add date created and sizes of paintings too, but for now contact me about details.

Book News from Nightlark's Nest Winter 2006

Trying to put more effort into writing my book. Trying to find time to paint and create new digital art...winter blue.

My book is a memoir about my experiences as an adoptee, my struggle in adolescence- girl interrupted, the art and therapy experiences that brought healing. My personal creative process & how many healing Dr.'s, artists, authors, and musicians have touched me and guided me on my healing journey. I will write about the reunion with my biological mother and it's impact on my life. what it was like to be a young parent and raise my son as a single parent. But, the most difficult part to write is about the 10 year battle to find my biological father- who is a disabled Vietnam veteran, of which I had oddly sensed was his plight since I was a young child. How our reunion has brought some healing and joy into his long years of despair and being misunderstood. Much like ALBIE.   (read more about that story on my squidoo lens: anti-war poetry)

Lastly how the reunions and my journey has brought new perspectives, wisdom, & the beautiful story of what I learned about the beauty, strength and love of adoptive families.

I went to see Christopher Kennedy Lawford at a local book signing and talk. He was a great speaker and after he spoke, I had time to talk with him a bit and about my plans to write my book. He had some great advice & encouraged me that I could finally complete my own book. His words stay with me as I try to be as honest and detailed as he was in his book.

(This is the book I keep trying to find time & strength to finish and hope to finish soon)

While I'm busy writing.... you may want to check out Christopher Kennedy Lawford's book, which can be found here book. review: a moving tale of self-discovery and redemption. Whatever else he may have been—son, nephew, cousin, etc.—Christopher Lawford shows himself here to be a writer of talent and grace. 32 pages of photos.

News from Nightlark's Nest Spring 2006

I haven't written any news in awhile, I was not feeling up to writing about how disappointed/outraged/sad I was that www.artforkatrina.com had to close down due to a dwindling of people wanting to purchase the artwork that was donated to help Katrina victims. On a personal level I had felt that my art contributions were making a small difference and that if everyone did their little something to help that some suffering would be eased. The loss of this connection to artforkatrina sent me into a bit of depression, to see on the news that the donations in general had dwindled was a real downer.

It reminded me of how I felt November 2004 when I was at the Election Night event at Copley Hotel in Boston, I got to meet James Taylor that night and i was an emotional mess, I will never forget how kind and compassionate James was when I shared with him the story of my own personal life experience of how the Vietnam impacted my family and how much this election meant to me...... shared the tears and my feeling for disabled veterans and the fear I have for the 'soon to be becoming' disables veterans- of which is adding numbers everyday- of soldiers who die and the many soldiers who are battling mental illness upon returning home. On that note, I hope to begin posting the first chapters of my personal book here soon.

In the time I failed to write or update my site I was in the throws of a difficult mood and situations this winter and was in a serious car accident but I am fine, by some kind of twist of fate, my car on the other hand was not fine and that was big setback and stress. Also, my computer broke so that made it hard to work on my digital art or update my site.

I want to thank all the people who have visited my site from all over the world!!! Please feel free to drop me email here and add your location to my frapper map, it is nice to see where my art site visitors are from!

Thank you all who have chosen my art to be their avatars at my space etc...
I am updating this site with new quotations to ponder today! check it out.

Links - adding my links page soon -- send me a link to your site for possible link exchange & to be included on my links page.
