More info/older news about the closed auction & the charities benefited with a press release are below NEWS 9/27/05: Well the sun finally came out here today, so I was able to take the paintings outside and take a few photos. They are digital photos, I had lent my good old 35mm SLR to someone and I just got it back tonight. So I am looking forward to taking some more photos tomorrow, I find I have more luck with the colors being true to life with 35mm. In the meantime I am working on some new digital art- so check back this weekend. I'm shipping out 3 paintings to Art For Katrina in NY tomorrow, so bidding will start soon. I'm working on compiling my
original paintings and digital art to make a new KLH ART DVD set to original
music for charity."KLH Art DVD for Katrina". I was thinking about
which charity and just became aware of The Katrina Musician’s Relief Fund and
the specific Habitat for Humanity of New Orleans. Marsalis is Honorary Chair for
Habitat for Humanity's New Orleans Relief effort and has also established the
Hurricane Katrina Musicians Relief Fund. For
more info about the
Music
Fund is here. NEWS Sept 24-2005: Art For Katrina is now mixing up the charities that benefit from their art auctions. Each painting up for auction has a notice of which charity the funds are going to with information about the charity in a link. If you buy a new piece of art, your are giving to hurricane relief + you get tax deduction and a piece new artwork. ART NEWS- ART AUCTION All artists are welcome to donate art for the charity auction fundraiser, Art For Katrina. One artist who found a way to contribute is KLH, an outsider artist whose artwork is archived in The STAR Outsider Art Collection at Vanderbilt University. She has created and donated a brand new series of paintings to raise money for hurricane relief. She was raised in Massachusetts and has witnessed firsthand the destructive forces of several hurricanes over the years on Cape Cod. She also has lived in the south, both Virginia and near Nashville, TN. She now resides in
New England. Her bold abstract art has been exhibited at The Global Art Project,
The House of Blues Cambridge, and New England art festivals and cafes. More specifics about Art For Katrina: The present Art For Katrina auctions are being donated to the charity Direct Relief International (note: as of Sept 24th- the Katrina art auctions are going to various charities, all 100% through Mission Fish Charity auctions) Here is the Direct Relief policy on Hurricane Katrina Donations read below or the link here for more info. If
you designate your contribution for Hurricane Katrina, we will use 100% of the
contribution for expenses directly related to Katrina and nothing else. We
believe this is a simple concept, but we also think it is important to spell out
what exactly it means to us when we receive a donation designated for Hurricane
Katrina relief. Direct
Relief never uses a specific tragedy for general fundraising efforts for our
organization. We also do not use a specific incident such as the Katrina
emergency to solicit funds for a loosely defined “disaster fund” or a fund
“to help these victims and others victims of tragedy.” This
is not because other tragedies deserve less – we have responded to
humanitarian crises for 57 years – but because we believe it is wrong to show
a picture of current victims in a particular place without committing to help
those specific victims with money that is given for their assistance. We
will not use Katrina funds to pay for any salaries, rent, administrative
expenses, or anything else that we had already anticipated in our budget -
despite the fact that we are devoting these resources extensively now to the
Katrina relief effort. We
always have the significant challenge of raising money for these expenses, but
we do not believe it is appropriate to cover these pre-existing expenses with
money that is clearly intended to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. We don’t
consider funds we receive specifically for Katrina “Direct Relief’s money”
but rather money people have given to us to do the right thing for victims of
Katrina. We believe it is for them and that we are trustees – to both you and
them – to make sure it serves them in the most effective way possible. Here’s
what we will spend your money on:
We will spend Katrina-designated donations on new expenses directly related to
Katrina that we have not anticipated in our budget. These expenses will include
such things as purchasing medicines that are otherwise not available and packing
and shipping costs to health facilities in the region. This is our particular
area of expertise and the needs in this area are significant. If
we have available funds, we also will provide cash assistance to front-line
health facilities to cover their increased expenses. If what we do ever becomes
not what is needed or is otherwise addressed through a better source, we will
give the money to a trusted, credible organization in the region that can help
address other essential needs for the people. For
credit card donations, as on this site, we must pay a fee of approximately 2% to
the credit card processing company. This is an unavoidable “administrative
expense” that we believe is right to use the money you contribute to pay the
cost of this transaction. We want to be clear about this because, in effect, it
does reduce a dollar to 98 cents, but it is an unavoidable expense for us and
not one that pays our salaries, or electricity bills, or other expenses. This
policy is consistent with our actions following September 11 and the tsunami
last December. Those policies are on this website, and you can read about how we
spent money in strict accordance with these policies. General undesignated
contributions to our organizations are always much needed for us to function.
Indeed, because we receive general funds, we have been able to respond fast and
extensively to the Katrina emergency. However,
we want any person considering making a contribution specifically for Katrina to
know that we will honor that intent and how we will do so.
